Wärtsilä has received a contract to supply the propulsion equipment for a new research vessel that will be operated by the United Kingdom’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). C.N.P. Freire S.A. shipyard in Spain will build the vessel, according to Wärtsilä.

The contract calls for Wärtsilä to supply four of its 8-cylinder inline 20 main diesel electric generating sets, two main propulsion steerable thrusters, one bow retractable thruster and a Low Loss Concept diesel electric system. The majority of the equipment will be delivered by the end of 2011, with the ship set to launch before the end of 2012.

The ship will provide a platform for researchers to address environmental issues. It is designed to allow them to obtain information on climate change, marine ecosystems and underwater seismic activity by gathering measurements from the world’s oceans.
