Peabody Energy and ConocoPhillips chose a site near Central City, Kentucky, U.S.A., to build a US$3 billion coalto-natural gas plant. The “mine-mouth” gasification project would use ConocoPhillips’ proprietary technology to produce clean-burning natural gas.

The plant would capture carbon dioxide that could be permanently stored or used for enhanced oil recovery. ConocoPhillips and Peabody agreed in July 2007 to build the facility, which will produce between 1.7 x 109 and 1.98 x 109 m3 of synthetic natural gas annually from more than 3.5 million tons of coal.
