Sulzer Pumps has received a major order from Alstom Power for the new Medupi coal fired power station in Johannesburg. The station is being built for national generator, Eskom.

According to Sulzer, the order includes a total of 48 pumps for boiler feed, booster, and condensate extraction duties. In addition to the manufacturing of the pumps, Sulzer will provide full project management of the pump modules, including the related equipment such as motors and couplings. The power station, which Sulzer reports will be the country’s first green field project for 20 years, will have an ultimate generating capacity of four 790 megawatt.

The pumps will be delivered in phases beginning in late 2009 to match the building of the six individual 798.3 megawatt power generating blocks that make up the station’s capacity. Final deliveries are scheduled for 2011.
