Cost and space saving motor technology

As one of the largest consumers of electrical energy, the AC induction motor has enormous potential to demonstrate savings. A recent development brings together the technology of the AC induction motor with that of permanent magnet servo motors. It offers to contain running costs while promising to pay for itself many times over.

Turbo pumping system reduces small to medium volumes

Varian Inc has extended its line of turbomolecular pumping systems with the addition of the TPS-compact.

This portable, turbo pumping system provides plug-and-play and hydrocarbon free vacuum pumping in both bench-top and mobile models backed by a light scroll pump. Varian says the system is capable of pumping down small and medium volumes very quickly.

The unit has been designed to make clean, dry, ultra-high vacuum readily accessible for applications including electron microscopy and high energy physics.

Lowara launches submersible grinder pump and high efficiency motors

ITT's subsidiary, Lowara, has recently launched an efficient grinder pump for the domestic sewage market. The DOMO GRI has been designed to deliver domestic sewage, liquids containing solids or fibres, and wastewater from residential buildings to the sewer mains or a pressurized sewer network.

Lowara reports that the DOMO GRI is of particular use in farm areas, small villages and homes built in remote areas where the conventional gravity sewage network is too expensive to commission. The company says the pumps are particularly effective where the sewer mains is located at high level or where the ground level is variable.

Global demand for pumps set to increase 4.4% per year

The Freedonia Group has recently released World Pumps to 2012, a report that predicts global pump demand is to climb 4.4% per year to US$47 billion (including price increases) through to 2012.

The study suggests that generally, healthy economic conditions will support gains in global pump demand, especially in rapidly developing areas such as China and India where rising energy consumption and infrastructure development projects will provide key applications for fluid handling pumps.

Switchgear for pressure boosting systems wins product of the year

The CC-Booster, a switchgear for pressure boosting systems from Wilo AG, has been voted Product of the Year at the recent Building Services Awards held in London.

The CC-Booster can control up to six single pumps of a pressure boosting system in a fully automatic way. Its core piece is a specially programmed control (SPS) which influences the base-load pump's speed by means of a frequency converter, switching additional peak-load pumps on or off when required. The pumps are operated in a silent and energy-saving way. It can be integrated into building management systems by means of available modules.

The Building Services awards, now in their 11th year, reward products in 17 different categories, acknowledging the strongest companies in building services.

Multi-million dollar order for nuclear power plants

Curtiss-Wright has signed an agreement with Westinghouse Electric Company LLC to provide reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) for up to four AP1000TM Generation III+ commercial nuclear power plants or a total of 32 RCPs.

Further, Curtiss-Wright has received purchase orders, valued in excess of US$300 million, to supply the first 24 domestic AP1000 RCPs. These will be used in Westinghouse's AP1000 design reactors, which will produce 1,100 megawatts each.
