Consider CHP for LNG Vaporization

The conversion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to pipeline-quality gas requires large quantities of low-grade thermal energy that may be available from industrial waste streams, steam power plants, or ocean water at the point of discharging LNG from the tanker. Alternatively, heat may be provided by the combustion of LNG or another fuel. In either [...]

Siemens Secures Power & Water Order for UAE

Siemens Energy has secured an order from Abu Dhabi for construction of the Shuweihat II combined cycle power plant with integrated seawater desalination facility. The company will build the plant as a turnkey project together with the partners Doosan Heavy Industries and Samsung Engineering & Construction approximately 200 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi.
After the scheduled start [...]

Andritz Hydro wins hydropower station order

A consortium comprising Andritz Hydro Brasil, Andritz Hydro Inepar and IESA Projetos has received an order to supply and install the electromechanical equipment for the Batalha hydropower station from the Brazilian federal utility, Furnas Centrais Elétricas.
Andritz Hydro says that the order value is approximately €44 million.
The scope of supply includes two Kaplan turbines (each with an [...]

Fast-Tracking a Control System Retrofit

Upgrading a 1970s-era generator control system to new millennium technology in 12 days during a three-week shutdown would require careful planning and teamwork under any circumstances. The quick replacement of the governor and control system at the PT Inco smelter’s hydroelectric generation system is even more impressive because the facility is located in the middle [...]

Siemens Receives Long-Term Service Program Order in the U.S.

Siemens Energy Inc. has been awarded a service program order from Klamath Energy LLC, owned by Iberdrola Renewables. The service program for the Klamath Energy cogeneration plant in Klamath Falls, Oregon, includes combustion turbine parts and service, generator rewinds and modernization upgrades, an inlet heating system, a combustion dynamic protection system (CDPS) and the innovative [...]

Fire Safety in Modern Hydroelectric Stations

It may seem counterintuitive, but fire can be a serious danger in hydropower plants. In some respects, the danger is even greater than in thermal power stations. Most U.S. hydro plants are 30 to 70 years old but can deliver another 20 or 30 years of service with upgrades—including state-of-theart fire protection systems. The design [...]

ABB Wins Large Power Order in Saudi Arabia

ABB has won an order worth $63 million from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia’s national power transmission utility, to upgrade 15 substations in the country’s Eastern and Central provinces.
The substations are spread over an area of about 1,000 kilometers, and cover a range of voltage levels from 13.8 kV to 230 kV. The project [...]

Fossil Fuels + Solar Energy = The Future of Electricity Generation

Renewable energy, though still accounting for a comparatively small portion of overall supply, generates a larger portion of the world’s electricity each year. Combining many of the available solar energy conversion technologies with conventional fossil-fueled technologies could reduce fuel costs while simultaneously helping utilities that are struggling to meet their renewable portfolio goals.
Renewable energy technologies face [...]

Flue gas desulphurisation grows in China

Chinese suppliers of flue gas desulphurisation systems have installed or have orders for plants with a total electrical capacity of over 500,000 MW.
This compares to only 180,000 MW in the U.S., according to a plant-by-plant analysis by the McIlvaine Chinese Utility Plans database. The research also shows that China is operating 379,000 MW of scrubbers compared [...]

Wärtsilä Wins Major Conversion Orders from Brazilian Power Producers

Wärtsilä has received contracts from three Brazilian independent power producers (IPPs) to provide conversions for their generating stations. The conversions will enable them to attain fuel flexibility and switch from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to gas operation.
The combined value of the three contracts, which were received in January 2009, is in excess of EUR 48 million. [...]
