GE has signed a framework agreement to form a joint venture with to help modernize the power generation sector in Russia. GE and state corporation Russian Technologies and Inter Rao Ues JSC intend to form a joint venture to manufacture, assemble, sell and service heavy-duty gas-fired gas turbines in Russia.
The joint venture will manufacture GE’s 6FA gas turbines at a factory to be built in the vicinity of Rybinsk, Russia. The turbines are intended to address a growing need in Russia for mid-sized power blocks in combined heat and power applications.
According to Russia’s Energy Ministry, the country needs to invest US$80 billion in the next 10 years to address aging generation assets, predicting the need for an additional 80 GW of thermal power generation capacity in the next 20 years.
