MTU Propulsion Technology For Korean Coast Guard

The Tognum business unit Engines has received two orders for the supply of a total of 28 MTU engines from the Series 2000, Series 4000 and Series 1163 to the Korean Coast Guard in 2009. The orders also include MTU automation systems for six new vessels. The total order value is US$55 million.

The engines and automation systems will be installed in new patrol boats with displacements of 300, 500, 1000 and 3000 tons. Contractual partners are the Korean companies STX Engine Co., Ltd, who manufacturers the MTU engines under license and the MTU distributor Meksan Engineering Co., Ltd. who packages the automation systems with consoles. The new ships will be built by the Korean ship yards Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) and Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd.

The scope of supply for all vessels also includes the latest MTU marine automation system, Callosum, with an integrated solution for proplusion control and an electric power management system and for monitoring further ship areas like bilge or tanks.

The Korean Coast Guard has increased and modernized its fleet over the past several years. As part of this effort, MTU supplied a total of 44 Series 1163 and Series 4000 engines last year to the Korean Coast Guard. At present, there are about 250 MTU engines in operation with the Korean Coast Guard.
