Fairbanks Morse To Support Commissioning Of The USS NEW YORK

Fairbanks Morse Engine recently announced that it has joined with the Navy League to sponsor the upcoming commissioning of the USS NEW YORK (LPD 21). Fairbanks Morse Engine’s sponsorship will support the Commissioning Committee’s activities to organize the commissioning of the U.S. Navy’s newest amphibious assault ship in New York City on November 7, 2009.

Rear Admiral (Ret.) Robert Ravitz, Co-Chairman of the committee, says “This commissioning will have special meaning to many Americans, and we thank Fairbanks Morse Engine for their generous support. When USS NEW YORK departs New York Harbor, her crew will carry the spirit of New York with them.” The USS NEW YORK is named for the people of the State of New York as a tribute to those who perished on September 11, 2001, and features over seven tons of steel from the fallen World Trade Center forged into her bow. When deployed, the ship will carry 360 sailors and 700 Marines, as well as aircraft and landing craft to support an amphibious assault. She will be homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.

USS NEW YORK is the fifth ship in the San Antonio class, and carries four Fairbanks Morse Colt-Pielstick PC2.5 STC diesel engines manufactured in Beloit, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Together they deliver over 41,000 bhp for main propulsion. “Our Wisconsin and northern Illinois based workforce is proud to have manufactured the propulsion diesels for the NEW YORK, and we are pleased the Navy continues to look to Fairbanks Morse Engine and the Colt-Pielstick medium speed diesel engine family for its mission critical propulsion and power generation needs,” said George Whittier, president of Fairbanks Morse Engine.
